Optimize your subject line with copywriting

In a previous blog, we shared how to use the CURVE method to improve your open rates. The next step is copywriting. By applying the right copywriting techniques, you can refine the words, tone, and rhythm of your subject line. Effective copywriting ensures that your subject line grabs attention and convinces readers to click on your email.

Copywriting is about choosing the right words that inspire action. Keep in mind that every audience is unique, so the same subject line won't resonate with everyone. Once you have a clear understanding of what your audience wants to see and hear, you can begin with the three essential steps for perfect copywriting in subject lines:

1. Keep it short and sweet

People have short attention spans and will quickly disengage if your subject line is too long. A common mistake is using excessive words, which not only fails to make your subject line more convincing but can also be counterproductive. Keep your subject line short and concise to maintain curiosity and minimize distractions, ensuring that your audience stays engaged.

2. Make it action-oriented, not sales-oriented

Your goal is to persuade the recipient to click on your email. To achieve this, it’s crucial that your subject line conveys value and prompts action. Phrases like "Open Now" or "Limited Offer" can come across as overly sales-oriented, which may make the recipient feel like they’re being sold to. Instead, focus on crafting an action-oriented subject line that engages curiosity without sounding pushy.

3. Use active language

As mentioned earlier, copywriting is all about persuasion. By using active language, you motivate the recipient to take action. Writing in active language can be challenging, but it’s essential for crafting compelling subject lines. For example, “New summer clothes have arrived in stores” is a passive sentence and doesn’t create urgency. In contrast, “Be the first to discover the new summer clothes” uses active language in the imperative mood, prompting the recipient to act.

Each of these steps is distinct, but they all share one common element: curiosity. This is a key principle of the CURVE method, where curiosity plays a crucial role.
